Simplifying Holidays: Creating More Joy and Less Stress

The holiday season often arrives wrapped in twinkling lights, full calendars and a long list of things that we should do. It comes with a mix of excitement and overwhelm. Decorating, shopping, baking, hosting and attending gatherings...it adds up quickly. While these traditions can be beautiful, they can also leave us feeling overwhelmed, stretched thin, and disconnected from the very joy that we are trying to create.

What if this year, you could create more happiness with less pressure? Simplifying your holidays starts with a clear vision and thoughtful choices that protect your time and energy. As a professional organizer, mom and wife, I believe the holidays should bring out the best in you, not the stress in you. With a little intentionality and a few simple shifts, you can create a holiday season rooted in presence rather than pressure.

Here is how to simplify the holidays and rediscover the magic in the moments that matter.

Start with a Clear Vision for Your Holidays

Before the season sweeps you away, take a few quiet moments and ask yourself:

  • How do I want to feel this holiday?

  • What actually matters to me and my family?

  • What traditions bring joy? Which traditions bring stress?

Having a clear vision helps you let go of the things that don’t align without guilt because it supports the feeling you want to create, not someone else's expectations.

Declutter Before Decorating

One of the biggest sources of holiday stress is clutter. Before busting out the stockings and ornaments, do a quick pre-holiday clutter check:

  • Clear everyday clutter. Tidying up your living areas before decorating creates a fresh canvas and reduces visual chaos.

  • Donate toys and household items. Clear out the items you don't use and toys your kids have outgrown to make room for gifts. Better now than later (or not at all).

  • Sort through your holiday items early. Decide what you want to keep, donate, or toss. This makes decorating easier and more meaningful.

  • Keep decorations simple. Choose a few favorite pieces rather than trying to display everything you own.

  • Remove the visual "noise". Let your seasonal touches shine!

Don’t Over-Deck the Halls

You don't need to decorate every corner of your home to feel festive. Choose the spaces that matter most: a cozy living room, a welcoming entryway, or a table centerpiece that makes you smile. A simplified decor approach means:

Less to store

Less to clean up

Less visual clutter

More intentional holiday beauty.

  • Focus on quality over quantity. Choose decorations that have personal meaning or bring you happiness.

  • Use natural elements. Pinecones, fresh greenery, or simple candles add beauty without overwhelming your space.

  • Set limits. Decide on a number of decorations or areas to decorate and stick to it.

Your home doesn't have to look like a holiday catalog spread in a Martha Stewart magazine. It just needs to feel like YOU. By keeping decorations minimal, you create a peaceful environment that invites relaxation and connection.

Create Boundaries Around Stuff

Gift giving can be joyful, but it can also bring in a lot of clutter. Setting gentle boundaries can make a world of difference.

Try:

  • Suggesting experience based or consumable gifts.

  • Setting a family gift limit.

  • Asking for contributions toward memberships, lessons, or special outings.

  • Letting loved ones know you are focusing on simplicity this year.

Most people appreciate clarity about your wishes, especially when it helps reduce stress. More likely than not, it will make gift giving easier for them too!

Build Margin in Your Schedule

Between school concerts, work parties, multiple family gatherings, events and errands, December can fill up fast! Leave yourself come breathing room. You are the protector of your schedule and should guard a few unscheduled evenings or weekends for yourself. Empty space on your calendar doesn't mean you have to fill it. That space really isn't empty. It is where rest, connection and real joy live and you should protect it.

A simplified schedule also creates:

  • Less rushing

  • Fewer obligations

  • More space to be fully present with your own family.

You don't need to attend everything to have a meaningful holiday. Challenge yourself to say no to anything that doesn't align with your vision this year.

Create Holiday Rituals That Nourish You

You don't need more tasks. You need more moments. Consider adding small rituals that support a peaceful and calm holiday.

  • Lighting a candle each evening.

  • A slow morning coffee before the day begins.

  • Making a gratitude list or journal entry.

  • A simple walk or drive to look at neighborhood lights.

  • A "device-free family night" each week.

  • "Nontraditional" holiday activities like family bowling or going to the movies on Christmas Eve.

Tiny rituals become the memories we treasure that can support your well-being.

Give Yourself Permission to Do Less

Consider this your gentle reminder that you don't owe anyone a picture-perfect holiday. Let go of unrealistic expectations that you see in the movies or compare yourself to everyone else's highlight reel.

  • You don't have to bake 12 kinds of cookies.

  • You don't have to buy elaborate gifts.

  • You don't have to host if it drains you of your joy.

  • You don't have to keep every tradition just because it exists.

You are allowed to choose peace over what you think everyone expects from you.

The Heart of It All

Simplifying the holidays isn't about doing without. It is about creating space for what matters and beginning new traditions that give you more:

  • Joy in the quiet moments

  • Laughter around the table

  • Listening to old stories

  • Honoring loved ones no longer here

  • Making room for the joy that money can't buy

When your home feels peaceful, your mind follows.

When your schedule can breathe, so can you.

I would add, be sure to honor the reason we celebrate Christmas. If I missed it, I apologize.
